Click to enlarge and get details Punji pits were a common, cheap and easy to construct booby trap used to create fear in the minds of US and Allied servicemen. Click the thumbnail for more details.
Punji (or pangi) stakes were also used as a defensive weapon, by BOTH sides, around hamlets, villages or any other place where an attacking force had to be slowed up. Try running through this lot. Similar traps were put down and then the field was flooded to resemble a padi field.

SOVIET SKS Simonov carbine

CHICOM Type 56 Carbine

Drawing on experience gained during World War 2, Soviet weapon designers developed the 7.62 x 39mm cartridge for use in a new breed of gun, the assault rifle. The first weapon to fire this new cartridge was the SKS self loading Simonov, a gas operated, 10-shot carbine that resembled a conventional bolt-action rifle in its outward appearance.

Equipped with a hinged folding bayonet under the muzzle, the SKS was certainly built to last. Laminated beech woodwork and heavy steel enabled the carbine to stand up to rough treatment on the battlefield, and the new cartridge offered powerful and accurate firepower to a range of 450m - ideal during an ambush.

The Viet Cong made extensive use of an SKS copy during the early years of the Vietnam war, receiving their supplies of the Chicom Type 56 carbine from communist China. Simple to operate and maintain, the SKS was eventually superseded by the more compact AK47. (see below)

Vietnam. 1967-01. A hand made grenade used by the Viet Cong. The handle was made of bamboo and had a friction ignition. A cord ran down the centre of the handle and when this was pulled it would ignite a combustible material which in turn ignited a fuse and detonated the grenade. (Donor: O. M. Carroll)
