 Corporal John Hurst EDMONDSON VC

  • Corporal John Hurst EDMONDSON VC, 2/17th Infantry Battalion AIF. 

 

  • He was awarded the VICTORIA CROSS, posthumously, for his actions on 13-4-1941 at Tobruk, Libya. 

 

  • Edmondson's grave later became the focal point of one of the most famous Australian photos relating to WW2 when 5 other Anzac VC winners gathered there on their way to the Coronation of QE2. See below.

Group portrait of five Victoria Cross winners, members of the Australian and New Zealand Coronation Contingent, in the Tobruk War Cemetery, during their brief stay while on their way to England to attend the coronation of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. 

They are, left to right: Private (Pte) F. J. Partridge VC, (Australia); Pte E. Kenna VC, (Australia); 215003 Sergeant J. D. Hinton VC, (New Zealand); Pte R. Kelliher VC, (Australia); Sergeant R. R. Rattey VC.
