c. 1917. Studio
portrait of Sergeant (Sgt) John James Dwyer VC, 4th Machine Gun Company.
Sgt Dwyer was awarded the Victoria Cross for "most conspicuous
bravery when in attack" on 26 September 1917 at Zonnebeke,
Belgium.
Sgt Dwyer captured an
enemy machine gun, carrying it back to the front line and using it
against the enemy as they counter attacked.
The next day he
took up successive positions, and lead his team back to Headquarters to
secure a reserve gun after his Vickers machine gun was blown up by a
shell.
He returned to
Australia in August 1918 and died on 17 January 1962. (Donor R.
