- Temporary Corporal (Cpl)
Alexander Henry Buckley VC, 54th Battalion.
- Cpl Buckley was posthumously awarded
the Victoria Cross for "most conspicuous bravery and self
sacrifice" on 1 - 2 September 1918 at Peronne, France.
- During a hold up in an attack,
Cpl Buckley and another soldier rushed an enemy post, killing four of
the occupants and taking twenty two prisoners.
- When the Company's advance was
again halted by an enemy machine gun post, Cpl Buckley was killed as
he tried to cross a bridge and attack the enemy as he had previously.
