Uniforms
for the common soldier were not really used until the 1700s. Before that
soldiers wore what ever they had on when they were
"recruited".
During the 1700s it became more common to
provide a uniform standard of dress and they gradually became fancier
and more elaborate. As in many things military, Prussia led the way.
This is an overview of how the
uniform progressed through the ages from utilitarian to very fancy
and then back to utilitarian.
Soldiers were originally expected to pay for
their uniforms by means of deductions from their wages.
