Hessian Black Leather Pickelhaube; Grand Ducal Hessian Train Battalion No18

The kokarde (cockade) on the right hand side is the Reichs kokade (red white and black), introduced in 1897 to commemorate the 100th centenary of the birth of Kaiser Wilhem 1.  The one on the left hand side is the state cockade (in this case Hesse-Darmstadt). The fluted spike was worn by all ranks in the army of the German state of Hesse-Darmstadt.

1987 version of the Pickelhaube, shown here to show the artillery style "spike" with a stylized cannon-ball in place of the "spear-head" of infantry.

This difference was exported to the British Army and from there to the Australian & New Zealand armies.

  • As the war progressed and demand for large quantities put a strain on supply Pickelhaube were made from thick pressed felt, tin, light steel or fiber. These were referred to as "Ersatz" which is a word that translates to false or replacement. The one shown is made from felt.

The Garde du Corps not only served as the Kaiser’s personal bodyguard, but was also the leading cavalry regiment in the Prussian (later the German) Army. The GdC was founded in 1740 and was garrisoned at Potsdam. In many ways the 1.GRzF shared the GdC’s elite status and was considered THE leading INFANTRY regiment of the German Army.

The GRzF Nr 1 was founded in 1688. It was also based at Potsdam and, like the GdC, was assigned to the Garde-Korps. The GRzF Nr 1 was unique in the German Army in that it was customary for extremely young House of Hohenzollern males to be inducted into the Regiment. They accomplished this by naming the young nobles as regimental officers a la Suite.

Austria-Hungary, also known as the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Dual Monarchy or k.u.k. Monarchy or Dual State, was a dual-monarchic union state in Central Europe from 1867 to 1918, dissolved at the end of World War I.

The double headed eagle is a common symbol in heraldry and vexillology. Several Eastern European nations use this symbol today, having adopted this symbol from the Byzantine Empire.

In Byzantine heraldry, the heads represent the dual sovereignty of the Emperor (secular and religious) and/or dominance of the Roman Emperors over both East and West.

The Russian tsars also adopted the symbol both to position themselves as successors to the Byzantine state and to likewise symbolize their dominion over the west (Europe) and the east (Asia).
