New Zealand Home Guard, WW2

Images and text by Aubrey Bairstow

The New Zealand Home Guard Uniform of Andrew Martin Warnock.

He served as a Sergeant in the Otahuhu and Onehunga Home Guard, based at Alexandra Park Race course in Epsom.

He was a high profile solicitor and was excluded from service in the Army overseas as he had three daughters.

After his death in the 1980’s I (Aubrey Bairstow his grandson) applied for his two medals, the 1939-45 War Medal and the NZ War Service Medal. He had earlier service in the Territorial Force and the National Military Reserve.

Sergeant's chevrons for NZ Home Guard

The presence of the HG badge on the pocket is probably not correct (as this seems to be a lapel badge) but this is how his tunic was found in his garage.

Side cap  (forage cap) with HG badge.

Home Guard armband. It is presumed that he wore this before he got his uniform.
This is a photograph of Sgt Warnock’s Home Guard platoon.

He can be seen to the right of the officer with the lemon squeezer.
