- I suspect that this is a WW2
vintage beret for the 2 NZEF.
- It bears the Tudor (Kings) Crown so
it is pre 1952.
- It has the "Onward" badge
so pre-dates the re-organisation that followed the war.
- It was made in London so is
unlikely to be peace-time issue.

This WWI New Zealand Wolsey Pattern
Sun Helmet is identified to Cpl. L. Morgan. Corporal Morgan was part of
the 3rd Howitzer Battery. The helmet is a khaki cotton covered cork pith
helmet that has a top vent and puggaree with the 3rd Battalion
Wellington Regiment wool (flash) badge of Blue-Red-Blue. The interior
has a green cotton facing lining that is lightly stained from sweat with
minor worn areas. The helmet still retains the brown leather sweatband
chinstrap. The interior of the helmet is marked and has the
British-Zealand crown with (W. D) and the broad arrow, and dated 1912.
The interior also has the soldiers name (Corpl L Morgan) partial service
number (1043), and his brigade. These Wosley helmets were worn during
the Gallipoli Campaign and then turned in when the units were
transferred to Flanders.

| Blue Beret as worn by the
Corps of Royal NZ Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (RNZEME) until it
was disbanded in the 90s. The band is black leather. The lining
has been cut out, the band cut in one place and a cardboard backing
piece has been inserted behind the badge. All refinements of the day to
make it fit better on the head. The badge is silver and gold with the
Queen's (St Edward's) Crown denoting the Royal title, the chained horse representing
harnessed power, the bolt representing electricity and the globe
representing the ability of the Corps to work anywhere. |
