NZVols-Wellington Highland Rifles Scottish Doublet An original private's red doublet of the Wellington Highland Rifle Volunteers. One of the 11 small Volunteer units in Wellington around the turn of the 19th C.

At a parade to mark the visit of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall in 1901, 45 all rank paraded under Capt. Mackintosh. The 11 together formed 1st Battn. Wellington Rifles which on 17 March 1911 became 5th (Wellington Rifles) Regiment.

The doublet was made by J. Ballantyne & co., Timaru & Christchurch. It has white facings, all badges and 1895 pattern Volunteer buttons (1 detached but present). On the lower left sleeve it has 2nd class marksman qualification at 600 yards.

New Zealand 1911 Coronation Contingent uniform

Rare, probably unique 1911 New Zealand Coronation Contingent uniform of W C Sinel. It is named to him as a Captain.

The uniform comprises a green tunic bearing NZ Defence Force Buttons (see left & ref Oldham 13/8). The collars have the very very rare silver NZ Fernleaf badges made for the contingent.

The hat is a battered green slouch hat. It has a silver NZ Fernleaf badge with a hook but different to the collars. It is more like a NZ Boer War badge in silver (or silvered).

The puggaree is tan (khaki), black and silver. The pants are standard breeches.  Sinel was a well known Auckland officer during WW1. He served at Gallipoli and later won a DSO and was MiD for gallantry. Images by Aubrey Bairstow
Victorian era Army Officer's Home Pattern Blue Cloth Helmet (Artillery)

Victorian era Army Officer's Home Pattern Blue Cloth Helmet (Artillery).

The plate is of the pattern used by the NZ Permanent Staff before the turn of the 19th Century.

It has been claimed that it had belonged to the Commanding Officer of the Military School established in Wellington in the 1880's and closed in the early 1900's.

An early pattern NZ redcoat Volunteer 'Frock' or undress jacket. It has the early - 1882 - pattern Volunteers buttons, rounded collar and is unlined as issued. There are corporals chevrons to the right sleeve, and the jacket has black facings - common amongst infantry companies. There are no other identifying badges, but it was alleged to come from a Waikato Volunteer unit. Accompanied by Infantry pattern trousers. Infantry had a red welt down the outer seam, rather than the wider 'corps' stripes.
  • Victorian era British and Colonial Units Officer's mess dress waist-coat.

Auckland Highland Rifle Volunteers

This is a Highland Doublet for the D Company, Auckland Highland Rifle Volunteers of New Zealand. Formed 1 March 1909. This unit was one of, if not the last Volunteer Unit raised in New Zealand, before they were abolished in 1911. Doublet is single breasted and has all 30 New Zealand Volunteers buttons present. The collars have the correct white-metal insignia of the unit.
