Notes: The helmet was in 2 pieces. The inner plastic shell could and was worn by itself in non combat situations. The leather chin strap was for that inner shell. It was front mounted. Note that the plastic shell has a hole in the front-center. This hole is where an insignia could be placed. The outer metal shell needed the canvas chin strap that was rear mounted.

The steel pot helmet is one of the most utilitarian designs produced for a US helmet and one of the longest lasting. Many news reels and pictures show the GI's using their helmet to cook, dig, carry water and many other functions.
