The Aussie is a member of 13th Light Horse Regiment wearing the colour patch of 2nd Division Mounted Troops (red and white diamond). He also wears the ANZAC "A" in bronze (1917 issue not the 1916 cloth type). The woven proficiency badge on his sleeve means he is either a saddler or harness maker.

He wears the two ribbons of the War Medal and Victory Medal and one suspects that the ribbon for the 1914/15 Star is there but hidden. The leather harness he wears was soon discarded for canvas replacements that lasted longer and required less maintenance.

John Monash enrolled for Arts at the University of Melbourne in 1882. In 1884 at 19 years of age, he was one of the first to join the new University Company, D Company, 4th Battalion, Victorian Rifles, formed in response to the Victorian Government's vigorous defence policy. Monash "threw himself into the class work" and was promoted to Corporal in October 1884, and to Colour Sergeant in September 1885. He went on to lead the first AIF, get knighted in the field and become Australia's most respected soldier. If you want a photo have a look on the Australian $100 note.
