Ceremonial Blues for Other Ranks circa 1962

  • In the 1950s and early 60s there was a ceremonial uniform called "Blues". Soldiers were few in number, underpaid and still shown a reasonable amount of respect in the community. This dark blue uniform was to be worn on ceremonial occasions and was on issue to all troops.
  • These two photos show a young 3RAR Digger on his wedding day in 1962. Note the red stripe on the trousers. Note the white shirt and tie. Note the "collar dogs" or small versions of the Regimental badge worn on the lapels. Note the peaked caps. Note the white gloves.
  • Both the soldiers are Privates. The groom is Pte R J "Bob" Hann and his best man is (the late) Pte "Bing" Crosby, both of 3RAR. The bride is Deslie Armstrong. Hann also served with 1PIR, 1 RVR, RMC and with 4 RAR/NZ (ANZAC) on the second tour of Viet Nam. He retired as a WO1.
