| Although the
AIF & the NZEF were collectively viewed as 1 large body they were in
fact made up of hundreds of thousands of individuals.
It was the individualism of the
citizen soldiers from the Antipodes that set them apart from the
soldiers of the more rigidly controlled European armies.
While it is impossible to list them
all here I can offer these men as fitting representatives of the whole.
The item to note here is not that they were "special",
although they must have been, nor that they were 'heroes", although
they were.
The really wonderful thing about these
blokes is that they were ordinary. Just ordinary Aussies, put into
extra-ordinary circumstances who responded in a way that changed the
history of the world. |
