  • God save our gracious Queen,

    • Long live our noble Queen,

    • God save the Queen!

    • Send her victorious,

    • Happy and Glorious,

    • Long to reign over us;

    • God save the Queen!

  • O Lord our God arise,

    • Scatter her enemies

    • And make them fall;

    • Confound their politics,

    • Frustrate their knavish tricks,

    • On Thee our hopes we fix,

    • Oh, save us all!

  • Thy choicest gifts in store

    • On her be pleased to pour;

    • Long may she reign;

    • May she defend our laws,

    • And ever give us cause

    • To sing with heart and voice,

    • God save the Queen!

First Performance: 1745
Adopted in UK: Early 1800's

Adopted in Australia 1901 and used until 1984; still used in Her Majesty's presence

Long version

first publicly performed in London, 1745

1. God save our gracious Queen,
Long live our noble Queen,
God save the Queen!
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us;
God save the Queen!

2. O Lord our God arise,
Scatter her enemies
And make them fall;
Confound their politics,
Frustrate their knavish tricks,
On Thee our hopes we fix,
God save us all!

3. Thy choicest gifts in store
On her be pleased to pour;
Long may she reign;
May she defend our laws,
And ever give us cause
To sing with heart and voice,
God save the Queen!

  4. Not in this land alone,
But be God's mercies known,
From shore to shore!
Lord make the nations see,
That men should brothers be,
And form one family,
The wide world over.

5. From every latent foe,
From the assassins blow,
God save the Queen!
O'er her thine arm extend,
For Britain's sake defend,
Our mother, prince, and friend,
God save the Queen!

6. Lord grant that Marshal Wade
May by thy mighty aid
Victory bring.
May he sedition hush,
And like a torrent rush,
Rebellious Scots to crush.
God save the King!

Australian National Anthem

   Before Advance Australia fair was partially re-written as our anthem it contained references that now-days might be considered politically incorrect. References to "Britannia Rules the Waves", and "Gallant Cook from Albion came", and "raised old England's flag". These are not in the revised version that is our anthem.

to hear the original ADVANCE AUSTRALIA FAIR

Advance Australia Fair was proclaimed as the national anthem by the Governor-General on 19 April 1984.

Australians all let us rejoice,
For we are young and free;
We've golden soil and wealth for toil;
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in nature's gifts
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history's page, let every stage
Advance Australia Fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair.

Beneath our radiant Southern Cross
We'll toil with hearts and hands;
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands;
For those who've come across the seas
We've boundless plains to share;
With courage let us all combine
To Advance Australia Fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair.
