Wellington
Regiment |

The Regiment
Although units of volunteer militia were in existence from about May
1840, October 1867 saw the start of the continuous history of the
Wellington Regiment with the formation of the "Wellington
Veteran Volunteer Corps".
The illustrations below show the various insignia etc that have been
passed down through the years from the various units and a
progression chart follows, showing the connections of these units.
The Band
Officially formed on the 6th of May 1933 from the Band of the Royal
Naval Volunteer Reserve as the Band of the Wellington Regiment, the
band has been continuously attached to the Regiment under it's
various titles since that date as a full Military Band and Corps of
Drums. As the New Zealand Army was reorganized during the period to
today, the band has been fortunate to be able to carry various
insignia from the affiliations on the full dress uniform of
bandsmen. |

The Collar insignia of the 9th Hawke's Bay
Regiment |

|
|
There is a tradition
associated with these Collar insignia: This was established by
Colonel R. Gambrill who led the 9th Hawke's Bay Service Company on
Gallipoli and who handed on his Collar badges to his successor on
relinquishing command, a tradition which has been observed ever
since. |

The Black Eight Pointed Star
|

|
|
Worn on the upper sleeves of the
tunic and behind the cap/beret badge, the star is from the New Zealand
Rifle Brigade 1914-1918 (This permission was granted ONLY to the
Wellington Regiment and subsequently passed on to ONLY the current
Regiment).
|
|
The Regiment has both a Queens
Colour and Regimental Colour presented to the then 7th Battalion in
1979 by the Governor General Sir Keith Holyoake GCMG, CH. To reflect
this honour, the drums of the band are emblazoned with the Regimental
Battle Honours and take second place only to "The Colours"
