1st
Mounted Rifles (Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry) was
formed 17 March 1911. It saw action at Gallipoli as part of the
Canterbury Mtd Rifle Regt. That unit was part of the NZ Mounted Rifle
Brigade (ANZAC Mtd Division) that served in Sinai & Palestine. In
1921 it was amalgamated with 8th South Canterbury Mounted Rifles and was
redesignated Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry. It became part of 3rd Armoured
Regt on 29 March 1944. |

Queen
Alexandra's 2nd (Wellington West Coast) Mounted Rifles was
formed 17 March 1911. As part of the Wellington Mounted Rifle Regiment
it saw action at Gallipoli. That unit was part of the NZ Mounted Rifle
Brigade (ANZAC Mtd Division) that served in Sinai & Palestine. In
1921 it became 2nd NZ Mounted Rifles (Queen Alexandra's Wellington West
Coast) and later still became Queen Alexandra's (Wellington West Coast)
Mounted Rifles. It later was absorbed into 2nd Armoured Regiment, 29
March 1944. |

3rd
(Auckland) Mounted Rifles was
raised 17 March 1911. It saw action at Gallipoli as part of Auckland
Mounted Rifle Regiment. That unit was part of the NZ Mounted Rifle
Brigade (ANZAC Mtd Division) that served in Sinai & Palestine. It
became 3rd NZ Mounted Rifles (Auckland) in 1921. This was later changed
to Auckland (East Coast) Mounted Rifles. Became part of 1st Armoured
Regiment on 29 March 1944. |

4th
(Waikato) Mounted Rifles Formed in March
1911. Saw action in Gallipoli as part of the NZ Mounted Rifle Brigade
(ANZAC Mounted Division) in Sinai & Palestine, 1916/19. Later became
the 4th NZ Mounted Rifles (Waikato) in 1921 and later still Waikato
Mounted Rifles. It was absorbed into 1st Armoured Regiment, 29
March
1944. |

5th Mounted Rifles (Otago
Hussars) was formed 17 March
1911. It was part of Otago Mounted Rifle Regiment so they saw service at
Gallipoli, Egypt and were the only NZ Mounted troops in France
(1916/1919). They amalgamated with 7th Southland Mounted Rifles and the
12th Otago Mounted Rifles to become the 5th NZ Mounted Rifles. They were
redesignated the 5th NZ Mounted Rifles (Otago Hussars) 0n 4 August 1923.
In 1927 they became the Otago Mounted Rifles. 29 March 1944 saw them
absorbed into 3rd Armoured Regiment. |

6th
(Manawatu) Mounted Rifles was raised
on 17 March 1911. It served with the Wellington Mounted Rifle Regiment
at Gallipoli. That unit was part of the NZ Mounted Rifle Brigade (ANZAC
Mtd Division) that served in Sinai & Palestine 1916/19. It changed
name to 6th NZ Mounted Rifles (Manawatu) in 1921 and later to the
simple, Manawatu Rifles. It was absorbed into 2nd Armoured Regiment on
29 March 1944. |

7th
(Southland) Mounted Rifles was
raised on 17 March 1911.As part of Otago Mounted Rifle Regiment it
served firstly at Gallipoli and Egypt and later in France, 1916/19. It
amalgamated with 5th Mounted Rifles (Otago Hussars) and 12th (Otago)
Mounted Rifles to become 5th NZ Mounted Rifles in 1921. |

raised on 17 March 1911 and saw action at Gallipoli as part of

1916/19. In 1921 it amalgamated with 1st Mounted Rifles (Canterbury
Yeomanry Cavalry) and became 1st NZ Mounted Rifles (Canterbury Yeomanry
Cavalry). |

(Wellington East Coast) Mounted Rifles 17
March 1911 was the formation date for this unit as well. As part of the Wellington Mounted Rifle Regiment
it saw action at Gallipoli. That unit was part of the NZ Mounted Rifle
Brigade (ANZAC Mtd Division) that served in Sinai & Palestine. In
1921 it became 7th NZ Mounted Rifles (Wellington East Coast) and later still became
Wellington East Coast
Mounted Rifles. It later was absorbed into 2nd Armoured Regiment, 29
March 1944.

(Nelson) Mounted Rifles was
formed 17 March 1911. As part of the Wellington Mounted Rifle Regiment
it saw action at Gallipoli. That unit was part of the NZ Mounted Rifle
Brigade (ANZAC Mtd Division) that served in Sinai & Palestine,
1916/19. In
1921 it became 8th NZ Mounted Rifles (Nelson) and later, The
Nelson-Marlborough Mounted Rifles. 29 March 1944 saw them
absorbed into 3rd Armoured Regiment. |

(North Auckland) Mounted Rifles
was
raised 17 March 1911. It saw action at Gallipoli as part of Auckland
Mounted Rifle Regiment. That unit was part of the NZ Mounted Rifle
Brigade (ANZAC Mtd Division) that served in Sinai & Palestine
1916/1919. It
became 9th NZ Mounted Rifles ( North Auckland) in 1921. At a later date
it was renamed North Auckland Mounted Rifles. It was absorbed into 1st Armoured Regiment, 29
March
1944. |

(Otago) Mounted Rifles was formed 17 March
1911. It was part of Otago Mounted Rifle Regiment so they saw service at
Gallipoli, Egypt and were the only NZ Mounted troops in France

5th Mounted Rifles (Otago Hussars) and 7th Southland Mounted Rifles
to become the 5th NZ Mounted Rifles. That occurred in 1921. |
