SS Aorangi (1883-1925)

The Union Steamship Company vessel SS Aorangi was chartered by the RAN in August 1914 to act as a supply ship for the fleet.

She was not commissioned into the Navy but continued to be manned by her civilian crew. Aorangi took part in operations against the German colonies in the Pacific.

Aorangi was returned to her owners in May 1915, after which she was passed to the British Admiralty. She was sunk as a blockship at Scapa Flow naval base in August 1915. Refloated in 1920, Aorangi remained in merchant service until scrapped in 1925.
