  • US Merchant Marine medal "Atlantic War Zone" WW2
  • This medal, "For Service 1917-1919" was presented to veterans in and by the State of New York.
<<< Obverse. Reverse below.

Awarded by the State of New Haven to "her sons who went forth to war that their homes might remain at peace 1917-1919".

Awarded by Congress for Service in Texas Cavalry: September 25 1918 November 11 1918

This is the GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC Civil War Veterans Medal issued to a member of the Women’s Relief Corps. The REASON it is dated 1883 is that NO medals were awarded to veterans of the Civil War Until this one was instituted during the Indian Wars of the 1880s.

Many of those serving in THOSE campaigns were also Civil War veterans. THIS specimen is dated 1886 on the back. The medal itself is a Maltese Cross shape in the manner of a Victoria Cross and measures 35mm each way. With the ribbon and tope service bar, it is 85mm. The service bar has three letters which indicate the area of service but I haven’t enough experience with this medal to say WHICH one that is.
