PRIVATE WAR SERVICE MEDAL
(Sam's Medal) |
 |
|
B. Delehunt and G. Oldham
as printed in the Journal of the New
Zealand Military Historical Society June 1983
The phenomenon of the private order
awarded for personal glorification or financial gain is well known to the numismatist and has been discussed frequently in the pages of numismatic journals. The institution of a war service medal by a private citizen is a more unusual occurrence. One such medal, awarded towards the end of
World War 2 and simply known as Sam's Medal has gained notoriety amongst New Zealand collectors.
In 1943 Private Samuel Temple, 2N.Z.E.F. was a participant in a parade assembled for the visit of the Governor-General of New Zealand (Marshal of the R.A.F. Sir Cyril Newall). During the visit His Excellency distributed campaign medals to the assembled airmen and soldiers. It transpired that there were not enough medals to supply each of those present and a number of servicemen were told that their medals would be forwarded to them at some future date.
Private Temple, feeling somewhat indignant, decided then to institute his own award to mark the service of those who had been passed over in the parade. The result was "Sam's Medal", an award designed, struck and distributed by Temple. Over the years Sam Temple has continued to award his medal not only to servicemen, but also to prominent personalities and private citizens whose service in connection with
the war, he felt, merited some greater recognition.
Included among those who have received the medal are His Late Majesty King George
VI and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth 11. These awards were both made on 24 June 1952-the medals being forwarded to the Chief Private
Secretary of the Prime Minister of New Zealand, who forwarded them to the then
Governor-General Sir Bernard Freyberg V.C. (who also was a recipient of
Sam's Medal) for transmission to Her Majesty. One wonders what Her Majesty. as the Fount of Honour felt to be the recipient of an award instituted by one of her subjects and forwarded to her by her personal
representative in New Zealand.
Sam's Medal is a circular award struck in bronze or aluminium. The obverse depicts the Kairo sign (PX) being symbolic of "the person of Christ
,and adherence to the Christian doctrine of pacifism". Flanking this are the letters AUG FZ-this being the first half of Temple's military number
(AUG FZ 508148)-the remainder of the number appearing on the reverse of the award. The whole is surrounded by a stylistic laurel wreath. The reverse contains a central crossed sword and trowel.
symbolizing destruction and rebuilding, above Roman numerals for 666-Temnle's local military number, and below, the.
Parthenon-representative of the name of Temple. The medal is suspended from a. black corded ribbon which is attached to the medal by a curved metal rod.
In all some 213 awards have been made, the full list being contained in a printed
roll that Mr. Temple distributed to the recipients. All medals were issued with the name and status of the recipient impressed on the rim. |

Medals
for service in Solomon Islands and Iraq |
Defence
Minister Mark Burton today (Nov 2003) announced that the government has
agreed to the institution of a New Zealand General Service Medal (NZGSM)
to recognise the current service in Iraq. Agreement has also been given
to amend the qualifying service for the NZGSM (Solomon Islands) to
recognise the service of members of the Police and the New Zealand
Defence Force (NZDF) who have served in the Solomon Islands with the
Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands (RAMSI).
The regulations determining the eligibility for personnel for these
awards are being finalised and will need the approval of the
Governor-General before the medals are issued.
"These awards recognise the significant contribution New Zealanders
continue to make towards peace and reconstruction in these two
countries", said Mark Burton.
"Previously, New Zealand has awarded the NZGSM to personnel
deployed to the Solomon Islands to evacuate foreign nationals, as well
as for contributions to the International Peace Monitoring Team during
the period 2000-2002.
"However, military and police personnel who have recently been
deployed under RAMSI to provide assistance in the restoration of law and
order and the rule of law in the Solomon Islands are not currently
covered by the eligibility criteria for the NZGSM. The regulations are
to be amended to extend the award to them.
"This year, New Zealand committed military personnel to the UN Mine
Action Force in Iraq. An engineering detachment was also deployed to
provide reconstruction assistance in Iraq, serving alongside the British
led international force. They, too, will now be eligible for recognition
through the NZGSM.
"Our NZDF service personnel, Police, and civilians are making a
very important contribution to re-establishing safety, security, and
infrastructure in both Iraq and the Solomon Islands. It is fitting that
they will now all be eligible for this medal." |
