 German Shoulder Shields WW2

The use of shields to commemorate a battle was not unprecedented in German Military history.  The method is very appealing yet somewhat limited, since there is an obvious limit to the number of shields a soldier may wear.  The shields were worn permanently on the upper left sleeve of the service or dress uniform, and in the same place in an overcoat. A soldier could be presented with more than one shield, and when this took place, the second shield was to be worn 5mm below the first one.

Men from India who wanted to see an end to British rule formed the Legion Freies Indien of the German Army and took their oath of allegiance in a ceremony on 26th August 1942. The ranks of the new Legion were swelled by hundreds of new members some of whose participation was far from voluntary until by mid-1943 it boasted approximately 2,000 members and was also referred to as Indisches Infanterie Regiment 950.

Unlike British practice in the Indian Army, the constituent units of the Legion were all of mixed religion and regional nationality so that Moslems, Hindus, Sikhs, Jats, Rajputs, Marathas and Garhwalis all served side-by- side. Approximately two-thirds of the Legion's members were Moslem and one- third Hindu.

An "Azad Hind" (Free India) decoration was also instituted by Bose in 1942 in four grades each of which could be awarded with or without swords in the German fashion. Both Indian and German members of the Legion were eligible to receive the decoration. Almost half of the Indian Legion's members received one or more of these awards. Above left Sher e Hind (Lion of India) the 1st class award with swords. A non-combatant version without swords was available.
Sandar e Jang (War Lord) for great personal bravery against the enemy (above left). The 2nd class of award. A version without swords called Vir i Hind (Hero of India) was awarded for "distinguished service". (above right)
