1) The Order of the Garter, Order of the Thistle, Order of Merit, Royal Victorian Order and Royal Victorian Medal are part of the Australian award system as personal gifts of the Sovereign. The Order of the Venerable Order of St. John is an independent honour within the Australian award system.
2) The class of Knight/Dame of the Order of Australia (AK/AD) was discontinued in 1986.
3)
Unit citations with stars are worn by members of the distinguished unit only if they served within it at the time the citation was awarded. Those without the star are worn by all members of the unit as long as they serve with it.
