Notes: Decorations in italics are
NOT part of the Australian award system.
*) These orders/decorations are never worn as ribbon bars alone.
1) The Order of the Garter, Order of the Thistle, Order of Merit, Royal
Victorian Order and Royal Victorian Medal are part of the Australian award
system as personal gifts of the Sovereign. The Order of the Venerable Order
of St. John is an independent honour within the Australian award system.
2) The class of Knight/Dame of the Order of Australia (AK/AD) was
discontinued in 1986.
3) Unit citations with stars are worn by members of the distinguished unit
only if they served within it at the time the citation was awarded. Those
without the star are worn by all members of the unit as long as they serve
with it.
