Adolf Schicklegruber, better known to the world as Adolf HITLER

The rise of Adolf Hitler from a lowly Austrian  house decorator and corporal in the German army in WW1 to supreme ruler of Germany is a tale that must be told elsewhere, however . . .

As he is the man who almost single-handedly gave us WW2 he cannot be ignored.

Here are five faces of evil.

  • Mussolini and Hitler in Rome.
Heinrich Himmler, No.2 man after Hitler. In charge of security which included the Gestapo, the SS and the death camps. One of the most murderous men in history. He committed suicide at the end of the war.
Field-marshal Erwin Rommel, called 'The Desert Fox' for his leadership of the German Afrika Corps in the Western desert campaigns.

Was a brave and intrepid infantry soldier in WW1 and an inspirational leader in WW2.

He changed to tanks after WW1 and learned his tank fighting skills in Poland and in the lead up to Dunkirk. By the time he went to Africa he was probably the best tank man in the German army.

He was considered a 'good' enemy for his insistence on obeying the rules of warfare and his almost old world chivalry, a trait badly lacking in Hitler's army.

He had great respect for the Australians who frustrated him at Tobruk and kicked his butt at El Alamein, even though he personally was not there.

He committed suicide at Hitler's orders to save his family after he was accused, probably falsely, of being involved in a plot to kill Hitler.

It is probably a bit ironic that Rommel, who became famous while fighting alongside the Italians in the North Africa campaign actually started on his rise to glory by leading successful attacks on the Italians during WW1.
