8th NSW Union Volunteer Infantry Regiment (Irish Rifles) 1899-1903

The Illawarra Company of the 8th New South Wales (Irish) Infantry Regiment was formed c1898-1899. 

The 8th Regiment needed extra recruits to bring it up to strength. Unable to raise another company from men of Irish descent, the resulting Illawarra Company was made up of men of non-Irish descent, and the special badge created for the company reflects this. 

The rest of the 8th Regiment wore badges featuring a shamrock. See above
